Jimmie Foxx Standing in Dugout photograph
Date1958 February
DescriptionA black-and-white full-length photograph of Jimmie Foxx standing in a dugout. Foxx, facing the camera, wearing a suit and tie, holds a cigar in his mouth. With hands on hips, Foxx stands with one foot on the ground while the other rests on the steps of the dugout. Turning his head slightly to his left, Foxx looks at a point in the distance and to the right of the camera. Visible to the left of Foxx is the figure of another man, also wearing dress clothes. The blue markings visible on the surface of the photograph are not original and indicate where this photograph is to be cropped for publication. A caption to the right of the photograph (not shown), typed in black ink, reads, "STP022403-2/24/58-SARASOTA, FLA: Wonder what he's thinking: For the first time in 16 years, Jimmy Foxx sets foot in a Boston Red Sox dugout. Recently rehired by the Sock after running into hard luck, Foxx showed up here today 2/24 and this shows him watching the team open spring training." Pasted on the reverse, a clipping of the published newspaper caption of this photograph reads, "TURNING BACK THE YEARS: Jimmy Foxx sets foot in a Red Sox dugout for the first time in 16 years as he watches spring drill at Sarasota camp. Foxx was recently signed by the Boston organization after it became known he was practically destitute." Stamped on the reverse (not shown), in black ink, is the phrase, "USED FEB 24 1958 6TH EDITION."
