Jimmie Foxx in Hospital photograph
Date1963 October 22
DescriptionA black-and-white half-length photograph of Jimmie Foxx resting in a hospital bed. Foxx, shown from the waist up, under the covers, wears a white t-shirt. Partially reclined, Foxx rests his right hand behind his head. Turning his head to his left, smiling, Foxx looks at a point to the right of the camera. The blue markings visible on the surface of the photograph are not original and indicate where it is to be cropped upon publication. A caption above the image (not shown), typed in black ink, reads, "10/23/63-ST.LOUIS:Sly Old Jimmy Foxx, baseball's No. 2 home run hitter and Hall of Famer, smiles broadly as he recuperates at Faith Hospital here, 10/23 after suffering heart ailment 10/22. Foxx, 56, attended former Card-inal Stan Musial retirement dinner here 10/20, and had planned to return to his home in Cleveland yesterday when he became ill. Foxx, a powerful right-handed batter, collected 534 home runs in his career, topped only by Babe Ruth' 714 homers." Pasted on the reverse (not shown), is a newspaper clipping of a portion of the published caption that reads, "Hall of Famer Jimmy Foxx still can mange (...) St. Louis hosptial after being Felled with a heart (...)." Stamped on the reverse (not shown), in red ink, is the phrase, "USED OCT 24 1963 6TH EDITION."
