DescriptionA black-and-white full-length action photograph of Jimmie Foxx batting. Foxx, wearing a Boston Red Sox road uniform, is depicted in his follow through position. Having just made contact with the ball, Foxx stands on his front, left leg while his right leg extends backwards, with only the toe of his cleat touching the ground. Following the momentum of his swing, Foxx holds the bat, with right hand over left, above his left shoulder, angled backwards. Foxx looks forward and in the distance, following the ball. To the right of Foxx is the Boston catcher, looking forward, also following the trajectory of the ball. Spectators seated on bleachers can be seen in the background. Foxx's uniform has been painted over and portions are heavily outlined, modifications made for publication. The background above Foxx's head as also been edited, eliminating the same netting that is present above the catcher. The black mark on the surface of the photograph, above Foxx's head, exists as an indicator of where this photograph is to be cropped for publication. Stamped on the reverse (not shown), in black and red ink respectively, are the phrases, "RECEIVED MAR 13 1939," and "LAST TIME USED JUL 7 1939 EDITION - 2." The small scale of the baseball field as well as the included dates indicate that this photograph was most probably captured during Spring training.
