He is wearing a Chicago White Sox baseball cap. There is a lamp in the background that has a Chicago White Sox lamp shade. The caption on the back of the photograph (not shown) states, "Nelson Fox, chosen yesterday as American League's Most Valuable Player, cleans shotgun for hunting trip at his home in St. Thomas, PA." Based on the caption, this photograph was taken in 1959.
