DescriptionA black-and-white portrait photograph of Tris Speaker. Speaker, shown from the chest up, wears a suit jacket and bow tie. Smiling, Speaker looks to a point to the right of the camera. The white background is not original to the image and has been modified for publication. Pasted on the reverse is a caption (not shown), typed in black ink, that reads, "TRIS SPEAKER DEAD TRIS SPEAKER, ONE OF THE IMMORTALS OF BASEBALL, DIED IN WHITNEY, TEXAS, DEC. 8, APPARENTLY OF A HEART ATTACK. SPEAKER COLLAPSED AT NEARBY LAKE WHITNEY AS HE AND A FRIEND PULLED THEIR BOAT INTO A DOCK AFTER AN AFTERNOON OF FISHING. A NATIVE OF TEXAS, SPEAKER WAS KNOWN TO THE BASEBALL MILLIONS AS THE "OLD GRAY EAGLE." HE WAS A MEMBER OF THE BASEBALL HALL OF FAME. HE WAS 70 AT DEATH. HIS BASEBALL CAREER BEGAN IN 1909. HE SUBSEQUENTLY PLAYED FOR CLEVELAND, WHICH HE LATER MANAGED, BOSTON RED SOX, WASHINGTON SENATORS AND PHILADELPHIA ATHLETICS. THIS IS A 1955 PHOTOGRAPH"
