Mel Ott photograph

Dateundated
DescriptionA black-and-white, head and shoulders photograph of Mel Ott. Ott is captured looking straight ahead with a large smile. He is dressed in a sports coat and a button down shirt. In the lower right corner is an unidentified object that reads, "MBS." A caption on the front of the photograph (not shown) states, "Mel Ott, former National League baseball star, is on the critical condition list at a New Orleans, La., hospital where he underwent surgery last night for a blocked kidney that threatened his life after he was injured in an auto accident. Doctors said his condition was 'touch and go' but a shade improved. He may face further surgery." A newspaper clipping is affixed to the back of the photograph (also not shown) and states, "Mel Ott, 49-year-old Baseball Hall of Fame member, above, underwent new surgery, Nov. 21 for a blocked kidney that threatened his life. While described as slightly improved after surgery in New Orleans, Ott's condition was still listed as critical. The former New York Giant slugger and manager and his wife were seriously injured this week before in a traffic accident at Bay St. St. Louis, Miss. He and his wife were treated at hospital in Gulfport, Miss., until his transfer to New Orleans where an artificial kidney was available for use during surgery." This photograph is undated.
