DescriptionA black-and-white photograph of Mel Ott and Sam Chapman looking on during a spring training practice. Both Ott and Chapman have their heads turned to the right side and have large smiles on their faces. Both gentlemen are dressed in Oakland Oaks uniforms. An unidentified stadium is in the background. Chapman is holding a baseball bat in his hands. A newspaper clipping is affixed to the back of the photograph (not shown) and states, "Oaks deny signing Chapman Oakland, Calif.: Veteran Cleveland outfielder Sam Chapman (right) watches spring training with Mel Ott (left), manager of the Oakland Oaks, after donning an Oaks uniform March 25 for the first time. He is reported to have signed a two-year contract with the Oaks of the Pacific Coast League, but the club officials deny the deal has been consummated. The signing would be a climax to weeks of of wrangling with the Indians, who are reported unwilling to part with Chapman." Based on the newspaper clipping and a date stamp on the reverse (also not shown), this photograph was taken on March 25, 1952.
