DescriptionA black-and-white, head and shoulders photograph Monte Irvin dressed in a New york Giants uniform. He is looking towards the camera and smiling. The image caption on the reverse (not shown) reads, "Tough Blow to Giants. Denver, Colo: Slugging star Monte Irvin, of the New York Giants, suffered a compound fracture of his right ankle, April 2, when he slid into third base in the second inning of an exhibition game with the Cleveland Indians, at Denver. The runs-batted-in leader of the 1951 season, 33 year old Irvin, left fielder, has been credited by manager Leo Durocher as the spark of his team's pennant drive last year. Almost sure to be out for a good part of the coming season, his loss is a big blow to the Giants' hopes for the bunting."
