Bio/Historical NoteShirt worn by Xander Bogaerts of the Boston Red Sox on April 17, 2021, and in Game 1 on April 18, 2021, both against the Chicago White Sox at Fenway Park. The Red Sox were the first team to wear a redesigned jersey as part of MLB’s new City Connect uniform series initiatives, allowing clubs to reimagine their own jerseys in a way that represents their city. These were the first games that the team wore these jerseys, which are bright yellow with light blue lettering in the theme of the Boston Marathon, held annually in mid-April (although not held in 2021 due to the pandemic). The shoulder also bears a 617 patch, referencing Boston’s area code, in the form of a runner’s bib. At the time, Bogaerts was the longest-tenured member of the Red Sox, having made his major league debut with the team in 2013, and went 4-for-5 with a double and two RBI on April 17th, the first time this uniform theme was utilized.
