Tris Speaker with Dick Burton and Jimmy Thomson photograph
Dateprobably 1946
DescriptionA black-and-white photograph of Tris Speaker seated at a desk with golfers Dick Burton and Jimmy Thomson. Speaker, shown from the chest up, wears a tweed suit jacket and tie. Pictured far left, shown facing the camera, Speaker angles his body to his left, in the direction of Thomson who is sitting alongside him at the same desk. Resting his right arm on the desk, Speaker is seen holding a pencil and a 'P. G. A. 46th Open Championships' button in his right hand. Speaker looks intently at Thomas who is in the process of signing a document on the desk surface. Burton, standing behind the seated Speaker and Thomson, is shown from the waist up, leaning forward, looking down at the desk and the document that is being signed. Wearing dress pants and a v-neck sweater over a white dress shirt and a tie, supporting a potion of his weight, Burton rests his right hand on the back of Speaker's chair and his left on the back of Thomson's. Thomson, pictured far right, shown from the waist up, wears a suit jacket, pocket square, and dress shirt. Looking down, head slightly turned to his right, Thomson rests his right arm on the desk top, pen in hand, signing a document. Thomson places his left hand on the desk, parallel to his body, to hold onto this same paper. Captured in an office-like setting, framed pictures of golfers are visible in the background on the wall behind Burton's head. Pasted on the reverse (not shown) is a newspaper clipping of this photograph published with the caption that reads, "Official registrar for the National Open Golf Tournament at Cleveland's Canterbury Club is Tris Speaker, baseball's "Grey Eagle." Speaker is here shown signing Dick Burton, British Open champ, center, and Jimmy Thomson of New York, right. Thomson is longest ball hitter in Open. " Also on the reverse (not shown), stamped on the newspaper clipping, in purple ink, is the date "JUN 11 1946," the probable publication date of this image.
