DescriptionA black-and-white collage photograph of Sandy Koufax captured looking solemn as he announced his retirement from baseball and the Los Angeles Dodgers on November 18, 1966. In the photograph on the left, Koufax is looking off to the side. In the photograph in the middle, Koufax is looking straight ahead with a small, tight lipped smile. In the photograph on the right, Koufax is glancing down. Microphones are visible in the foreground in all three photographs. Koufax is dressed in a suit. Koufax retired after playing in the Major Leagues for 12 seasons so he could prevent causing permanent damage to his left elbow that already had an arthritic condition. A newspaper clipping is affixed to the front of the photograph and states, "Famed pitcher Sandy Koufax was very serious 11/18 as he announced his voluntary retirement from baseball. He said he had asked the Los Angeles Dodgers to place him on the voluntary retirement list for reasons of his health and physical condition." Based on the newspaper clipping this photograph was taken on November 18, 1966.
