DescriptionA black-and-white photograph of Sandy Koufax shaking hands with Walter Alston after winning a game, 2 to 1, against the Chicago Cubs on August 29, 1961. Koufax is beginning to smile. Koufax and Alston are dressed in the Los Angeles Dodgers road uniform. Wrigley Field Stadium and numerous baseball fans are visible in the background. A newspaper clipping is affixed to the front of the photograph and states, "Los Angeles Dodgers manager Walt Alston (24) is the first to congratulate Dodgers' pitcher Sandy Koufax as he comes off the mound after Dodgers beat Cubs, 2-1. Koufax allowed only two hits and struck out 12 Chicago batters to increase his season total to 212, third highest by a left hander in modern National League history." Another newspaper clipping is affixed to the back of the photograph and states, "Manager Walt Alston congratulates Sandy Koufax following his two-hit win over the Cubs. It was the fifth two-hitter for Koufax who also has a one-hitter. En route to the win, Koufax fanned 12 Cubs, raising his season total to 212, 25 shy of the National League season record set by Rube Marquard of the Giants in 1911. Since joining the Dodgers in 1955, Sandy has struck out 895 in 897 innings." Based on the newspaper clipping this photograph was taken on August 29, 1961.
