DescriptionA black-and-white photograph of Mel Ott and Honus Wagner comparing baseball bats before a game. Both men are holding their respective bats out and have them crossed in the air. Ott and Wagner are looking down towards the bats with straight faces. Ott is dressed in a New York Giants road uniform and Wagner is dressed in a Pittsburgh Pirates home uniform. A newspaper clipping is affixed to the back of the photograph (not shown) and states, "Mel Ott (right) of the New York Giants, will set a new National League record for bases hit when he exceeds the total of 4,888 established in 1917 by Honus Wagner, (left) now a Pirate coach, photographed at Giant-Pirate game in Pittsburgh, May 28." Based on the caption, this photograph was taken on May 28. Based on the caption and a date stamped on the reverse (also not shown), the photograph was taken on May 28, 1945.
